I cant imagine what kind of crops they would grow. I know they can move things several times their own body weight, but still... Do you suppose they grow rice and its not actually a farm, but a paddy?

  1. depends in the ants.

some farm aphids and milk them! Some farm termites!

Imagine that little aphid milking machines!

Some farm a fungus, but those are pretty mean little ants, I do not think you want those in your farm.

Like I said, it depends on the ants.

  2. ant "farms" refers to how the ant colony's, which became pets, was usually put in a farm designed box with little Minny barns and wind mills. Farm scenes were first used because ants harvest during the warm months like humane farmers but ants do not grow produce.

  3. I think you are mistaken in the "harvesting" bit

The ant farm is just that ... a collection of ants .. in a glass box ... going about their lives ... and you being the observer.

  4. The ants on my ant farm tried to raise patty rice once and they all drowned. I had to find all new tenants and forbid them to try to grow patty rice. Right now they are growing corn for ethanol.

  5. They harvest 'shrooms.

Oddly enough, though you ask in jest, certain ants like leaf cutters actually use the cut leaves to feed underground mushroom plantations and feed on fungus.
