what would i do at a sports theripist/chiropractor. how can they help ice skaters? i fall on my back end, knees, side and stuff like that. after i skate i am sore and it lasts for a few days to a week, and continues in a vicious-injury cycle. i dont mind falling, but it is hard to jump (or move for that matter) and it gets in the way of my sk8n if my muscles/joints dont work propperly. what should i inquire about/ go in for? what other things should i know about before i do this? i hear all the time about high competitive sk8rs (which i am not, but i do fall alot) that have masseuses, sports theripist, and the likes, but i have never done this, but i figure now is a good time to do this because i am worried about long term affects and such.

  1. I would see your doctor first and if need be he will refer you to a chiropracter.

  2. It can't hurt to go.  They may be able to give you some exercises you can do on your own to improve flexibility and when you're feeling pain and stiffness.

There used to be a chiropracter who skated with us.  He actually did a study on skaters, their range of motion and used a bunch of us in his study.  It was kind of cool.

I've also been thinking about going.  After this many years of skating and falling, I'm sure I've messed something up!  But the funny thing about skaters is we get hurt and keep going.  We seem to think, eh -- it'll go away.  Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't!  Maybe at least get checked out so they have a baseline for the future.  :)

  3. Go! Especially if your insurance covers it.

I injured my back a few years ago (I slipped on the landing when trying to get in a kayak and ended up totally throwing out my lower back.) I went to a chiropractor who not only had training for sports injuries, but also was an avid kayaker, mountain biker, and skier. So I frequently paid her visits all through ski season. A couple of years later, I tore my ACL skiing. Between her and the orthopedic clinic I was back into good shape in no time at all. I still haven't had the knee operated on. I moved just over a year ago, but if I have any problems I don't mind making the 4 hour drive to see either the chiropractor or the orthopedic docs. (Both are in Vermont and specialize in skiing related injuries.) But I still go to a chiropractor for regualr non-skiing related tune-ups here in PA. I also work for a spa, so there are plenty of massage therapists in my workplace. If I get into a pickle that I need immediate attention I just grab one of them and have them work out my kink for five minutes.

Just about any sports medicine or sports focused chiropractor will do a fine job for you. If you can find one that has a lot of knowledge about your specific sport, even better.

    Good Luck!
