  1. Unreliable is a tricky word. Do you mean that every time you want to ride, something else is broken? Or do you mean that the brakes don't stop properly, the chain always jumps out of gear, etc...?

I would recommend taking your bike to the local bike shop to have someone check it out. It may just need some adjusting that can be done cheaply and quickly.

Upgrading a bike can get really expensive, really fast! Unless you have a high-end quality bike to begin with...which I wouldn't expect you to call unreliable...I would recommend shopping around for a new bike. Your local bike shop will be invaluable and can really help you find what you need in the budget that you have to work with.

  2. With the money(and time to find the right sizes) you're gonna have to spend on new parts for the bike, you're better off just getting a new one(a bike shop quality bike), or getting a top of the line tune up from the bike shop.

  3. Suspension: Rock Shox and Fox are the best brands. Rock Shox has some lower end shocks that you could find for a decent price.

Saddle: From what I've seen most high end mountain bikes has either Bontrager, or WTB seats. I'd buy something brand name, and comfortable.

Handlebars: I'd buy any of the following brands: Easton, Bontrager, or WTB.

Gears: Can't really go wrong with Shimano.

    Breaks: Go with disk breaks
