  1. Not unless you know exactly what you are doing and have a lot of cash flow.  I am an expert in that industry and even opened my own and lost my *** as unforseen circumstances cost me my initial capital.  I don't recommend unless you truly research what you are getting yourself into!!!

  2. No. The economy sucks right now.

You would be better off going into debt with student loans and getting a college degree online instead.

  3. best startup would be a hole in the wall pizza shop, expand later

  4. Mate, depends on a number of things.

Where about you plan on setting up; this is important, because you're going to want people to know where it is and if it's in a good area.

Customers, you need to think about who you are going to sell to, families? Make sure the restaurant is equipped for this. I work in a pub that's aimed towards singles and football fans, t.v screens for watching games, chart music. You see where this is going? Think about what the majority of the people in the certain area would like before you do anything.

  5. If you have a good location and are willing to work very hard or be able to hire very good trustworthy staff you will do alright.

I'm partial to Italian food when I eat out.

  6. If the restaurant is in a good location and if you plan on serving high quality food made from the freshest ingredients and the food you serve is not the same as every other restaurant in that vicinity, people like variety.  example: don't open a pizza restaurant if there are 5 other pizza joints in that area

  7. Don't do this unless you have enough income to tide you over for a year.  Take business courses and read up on how to start a small business.  Expect to work many hours before you open the doors and after you close.

I recommend you watch some TV shows like Restaurant Wars, h**l's Kitchen, BBC's Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

Quote:  A longitudinal study of restaurants in Columbus, Ohio found the failure rate for restaurants was 57 to 61 percent for a three year period (1996-1999) – still high, but much more in line with other businesses.

It takes a lot more skill to cook for the public than to cook at home even if it is a large crowd.

My personal recommendation is for you to go to work at a restaurant of the type you enjoy going to.  Do all the jobs.  Become a bus boy, server, cashier, dishwasher, chef, prep cook, manager.  Then you'll know what you're in for.

Take some restaurant management courses.  Make up a business plan.
