  1. I agree.  Arenal and La Fortuna are my favorite (neighboring towns).  I would highly recommend taking the Pure Trek Canyoning tour in La Fortuna.  It was one of the most exiting and challenging things I've ever done.  It's miles past the canopy zip-line tours.  After the morning Canyoning tour, we spent the day at Baldi Springs.  That was awesome as well.  We stayed at the Observatory Lodge near the active volcano.  Sitting on the porch of the hotel, watching lava flow down and hearing it gurgle in concert with the rainforest wildlife noises was unbelievable!  Set your alarm to just before sunrise... Sun rising on an active volcano with the birds and monkeys getting up and singing is indescribable.

The restaurants I went to (love the Lava Lounge) were very good and reasonable.  The people were uber-nice.  There are a couple good little local bars with live entertainment, and one discoteque there too.

I've been to Costa Rica about 8 times, and that is my new favorite place!

    Have a great time!

  2. I would definitely go to see the rain forest. I would do some scuba diving also!!

  3. First, go to La Fortuna to see the Arenal Volcano and the La Fortuna Waterfall. Make sure to visit at least one of the hot springs resorts while you're there. Tabacón and Baldí are the most popular, but Eco Termales is a quieter, more private approach (which is also high quality and relatively inexpensive). Then, you should make your way up north to the Venado Caves. A trip to these adventure caves can be planned in La Fortuna. Then you should make your way (perhaps on the same day as your caves trip) up to Rio Celeste, one of the greatest natural wonders of Costa Rica. During a great (but relatively difficult) tropical forest hike, you can see one of Costa Rica's best waterfalls, as well as the spot where volcanic minerals turn the river a pretty light blue. You can get all of this done in five days starting in San José. For guidance, check out my guide to Northern Costa Rica and let me know if you have any specific questions.
