  1. Veganomicon is superb, and contains a lot of good basic information for beginner cooks (chapters like How To Cook a Vegetable, for example.)

Another good one for beginners is the Student's Go Vegan Cookbook.  It's geared toward college students so it easy, uses basic cookware and is budget conscious.

  2. Vegan Express by Nava Atlas

    Or try

    Veganomicon by Isa Moskowitz

  3. i would invest in a hooked on phonics book before you go out and buy a cookbook so you can improve your grammar and your spelling. Secondly I would really research on whether you really want to be a vegan or if you should try being a vegetarian instead but still drink dairy and eggs. Otherwise if you have your heart set on this vegan idea then get some cookbooks from your library on vegetarian Indian cuisine. It's by far the best tasting and best for you vegetarian cuisine.

  4. Vegan Planet by Robin Robertson

  5. If you've never been vegetarian I would recommend being a vegetarian first.

I was a pescatarian for 9 months and then decided to go vegan.

It's a lot easier and you won't be setting yourself up for failure.

  6. they make vegetarian cookbooks, i'm sure they sell them at most places.

    =]

  7. Vegonomicon is supposed to be very good.

However, if you've never cooked, or not much, I would suggest checking out the chefs on YouTube so you can actually see food being made. There's a ton of them. That will make it much easier and as you watch them you'll find new foods and become accustomed to it so it will seem more familiar when you do make it. Also, even if you don't care for a food (or don't think you will) you can watch to gain skill.

    Here are some good ones:

Vah Chef does Indian food really well and fun:

And Everyday Dish does pure vegan food:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/everydaydish

Hippie Gourmet does organic/sustainable (not all are vegan):

    http://www.youtube.com/user/hippygourmet

Same with Cook Us Interrupt Us:

    Those can get you started.

Also do an internet search to see if you have any cooking classes near you at cooking schools, kitchen or grocery stores, community colleges or centers, etc.

For a general book I would suggest Harold McGee's "On Food and Cooking" because it explains why food does the things it does when we prepare it/store it, etc. That helps make cooking work as it makes more sense why things are done like they are:

Cooking is a great skill to have and it's very rewarding (plus it attracts friends like no other especially in college). Plus once you get good at a few dishes you can share them with your family to show them how good it can be. :)

  8. ~Skinny ***** in the Kitch (but Ihighly recommend reading Skinny ***** as well)

    ~The Veganinomicon

~and the best of all... Vegan with a Vengeance

  9. Well your best bet besides the internet and cheaper than buying would be to go to your local library like i do and ask them about vegan books or if they dont have at their library they can easy transfer it from other libararies just make sure you have a libarary card (should only cost a $1 depending on if your library chargers) that way you can flip through them in advance and if you really like them you can go buy it later rather than being let down on something you thought would be good but wasnt my best advice is look by publication date ( in other words books most recently in print especially nothing before 2001 is my limit and make sure they have pictures is key so you know what your making
