  1. What exactly are you most naturally gifted in? Sprints or long distance?

I don't really understand what you question is, but I'll give you some advice. First off, I don't really know all that many schools that have kids "try out" for cross country...even if your not on varsity, you'll always run on jv, because you can have an unlimited number running..so you always get to run in meets.

For over the summer training..I'm not sure what your natural ability is, but you should ask the cross country coach at your school to write out an entire workout of what you should do over the summer...I'm sure he/she would be happy to do that for you, as long as you ask nicely.

Before every workout, make sure you STRETCH. I can't stress that enough. Stretching is SO important and heavily decreases the risk of an injury..so don't skip stretches just because you want to cut back on time, trust me it's not worth it.

Drinking water is actually VERY important. Drink  a plentiful amount of water EVERYDAY, EVERYDAY of the year. You'd be surprised at how much that helps in your training...

I don't know too many runners who are dedicated enough to run on their own, and run well on their own...if your just starting out with running xc, you need to see if the xc team in town has runs, or summer training...just get in touch with the coach, and he/she will tell you everything you need to know...

You need to set goals over the summer of what you want to run when you run your "time trial" or first meet...write it down on paper, that way you can actually see it..I know it sounds somewhat silly, but put your goals somewhere on your wall, so you are motivated everyday...

  2. so whats your question, if you'll make it?

  3. Cross country is much different than track, so you will have to train differently. Most races are 5Ks which is 3.1 miles. You have to run on different terrains, and uphill to get better at cross country because races are on any and everywhere, and any kind of weather. Run long distances, work hard, and you should do pretty well this season. Good Luck.
