This is going to sound strange, but I have done it several times.  Go to garage sales, look on Craig's List, advertise on Craig's list, for waterbeds.  Most people don't use the old type they used to make and they are sitting in the basement or stored.  Many had drawer storage as part of the base. Nicer ones had nicer drawers; cheap units had cheap drawers.  However, they make really nice storage under a platform bed.  In fact, I have simply taken a complete waterbed, cut it down a bit, and inserted a mattress where the water bag had been, and there was a platform bed. I have also used the base and only a two inch portion of the sides attached to the horizontal platform, then put the mattress on it, and still had a nice looking platform bed.

You can usually get a queen waterbed for not a lot of money, with drawer units under it.  I just bought one, with bookcase headboard, eight drawers and three cubbies in base, for $175 in really good shape, for my cabin.  I just put in a liner, then my queen mattress, and it works and looks great.

another way is to buy drawer units, home depot sells them, buy the correct sizes to arrange a row down each side of the bed, buy a sheet of plywood  the size of your mattress put on top of the cabinets install a few screws though  the plywood into drawer units so it all becomes one. It won't be cheap though, maybe $200

The old waterbed idea is the best way to go!!!! People will do about anything to get rid of these things, maybe even pay you to take it!!! LOL

You can build drawers into the bed! Or cubbies, cabinets, etc.

Instead of drawers etc., have you considered building it in the style of a futon?  Hinging the panels above the platform (where your matress will rest) and using the entire inside of the platform base for storage?
