Im trying to connect to my network connection, "cannot associate with the access point"?

Question

I can "see" the access point, with 70%+ signal, but whenever i would click on it, it cannot associate with the access point. There is no password or security set on the router. First i connected straight to the main router. Then my computer had some bad problems so i had to reinstall windows and then it was fine. Problem is, i connected to my brother's router that connected to the main router, and the internet worked great. Now that my brother left for college im stuck with a router i cant connect to and nothing helps.
