  1. What penal system did he serve his time in? Was it one of the States? Was it the Federal system? They could at least tell you how long he served. They may not know where he went once he got out. For that, try asking family.

  2. If you are in the USA and know his SSN, the SSA will forward a letter from you to the address they have for him. The address may not be good and he is under no compulsion to answer it.

It would seem to me that the parole board could forward a letter from you to him. Ask them. That way his privacy is protected but he would know you'd like to hear from him. I don't know much about parole boards.

The SSA (above) and most college alumni associations will forward letters. You write to them, sending the letter, a letter to them telling them who it is for, and a blank, stamped envelope. They read the letter to make sure you are not threatening harm or begging for money, address the envelope and send it on.

Again, even if they do, he is under no complusion to call or write.

The fact he hasn't contacted you in 5 years is a hint, I suspect.

  3. The reason why you may be denied the information is either because of Privacy Act restrictions, or because you are a minor.

Finding him shouldn't be that difficult. All you need is his name, last known city/state of residence, DOB or approximate age.

If you are 18 or older, let me know. If you are a minor, tell your mom that I need her authorization to help you.

By law I must verify your age.

By the way, Ted (above) is right. The SSA can be of great help.
