  1. I asked the same question and found a startling answer, but a simple solution and I've tried it many times and generally get listed on the first or second page of yahoo.com or google.com in a search of a site I've built.  READ ABOUT SEARCH ENGINES and HOW THEY WORK at http://www.monash.com/spidap.html .  Once I started to understand how search engines work, used the right META TAGS (See also caution at http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.ht... and built better links with relinks to my sites, then I started to move up on search engine charts.  It's the same old marketing point: LOCATION, LOCATION, but in this case SEARCHABILITY.  Pointedly define your site like for "Vacation Home Owners" and THEY WILL COME.

As far as marketing plan: I ALWAYS USE http://sba.gov .

Sounds like you have a great concept that might take off.  Import to link with others, just ask them to co-link with you and I think you'll find that as you  provide linking to other peoples sites, then they will also provide links to your site.  It's a great way to build business AND search engines recognize that others are linking to you and they move your site up the listing ladder.

    Good luck in your quest.

  4. I am going to give you the only marketing/advertising answer you will ever need

www.salesmedium.com if you have not looked at the services they provide you are doing yourself and your business an injustice they do alot for my business and i sell tires "best decision i ever made' plus the traffic they drive is unbelievable I went form 112 visitors a week to over 400 a day in less than a week

    I am still in shock!

  5. I think that your site would be a good candidate for a few different types of promotion:

An online press release.  I'm not referring to press releases that are submitted to media & journalists, but press releases that are submitted directly to sites that syndicate the press releases & news sites such as Google news.  I am running a special on these types of press releases (all-inclusive writing + submission) right now, but the site's not online yet.  If you want your site to be a case-study, I'll offer it to you for less than $50.  You can contact me through Yahoo Answers if you want to chat about it.

Video marketing.  Put together a short video (or pay somebody if you don't know how) about vacations or rentals or something similar.  Then, upload it to sites like Youtube, Metcafe, AOL video, etc & be sure that you're targeting the right keywords... this can work wonders in some cases, and I think it'd be a winner for your site.

Classified ads.  Some before me have mentioned various classifieds websites, but one in particular: http://backpage.com - will allow you to advertise in a lot of cities with HTML ads (pretty ads) and will be "seo-friendly" as well.  I've used this site with great success for certain campaigns - and though it's not free, it is very, very cheap considering what you're getting.  Depending on the category and city, you can advertise in a city for 10 cents per week...  Plus, if you advertise for multiple weeks, you can receive decent discounts (4 week ads are 25% off, etc).

I've received a lot of direct traffic from my ads on that site and an increase of my website's rankings because of my links in my ads on that site.  I can't guarantee your results, but it may be worth the $3 - $5  to try it out for a week in a few different US cities.
