Image information?

How do I view the information of a picture, such as camera and date taken? I know it has to do with the metainformation and the exif file. I've tried using exifreader, exiftools, and opanda Iexif but none work on most of my pictures.

  1. I use exiftool quite a bit, though the command-line interface might be daunting to some people.

Another bit of free software, with a considerably more ergonomic user-interface, is PhotoMe. It's actually quite nice, and I've used it a fair amount without issue:

If you succeed in installing the software and opening up a photo file, but still find no metadata, it probably means there's no metadata there for some reason. I can't say why this would be the case, except:

    - The dinky little cameras in cell phones, so far as I can tell, often don't write any metadata.

    - Maybe some very old, very non-standard cameras don't write metadata.

    - If you modify your photos with certain software, it could erase the metadata. At the very least, it may muddle it a bit. Even Photoshop does this.

    - Are you using some strange file format? Jpeg = NOT strange.

  2. well it depends on what tkind of camera you have.
