Imane Merga and Vivian Cheruiyot to highlight the International New Year’s Eve Run BOclassic in Bozen
The International New Year’s Eve Run BOclassic run, which will observe its 37th edition this year, is going to be a special event. The athletes that are going to add vigor to the entire event are none other than Imane Merga Jida and Vivian Cheruiyot.
Imane, the 23-year-old long distance runner, is the winner of the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships from Ethiopia, whereas Cheruiyot, the 28-year-old is an outstanding performer from Kenya.
For the race that is planned to take place on December 31 in Bolzano, Italy, the afore mentioned athletes are the defending champions for the men’s and the women’s races, respectively.
Imane, the young emerging athlete who finished third on the podium in the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, is a specialist runner over the distance of 5000m and 10,000m.
The Ethiopian, who has established himself as an impeccable runner, has won a number of prominent running titles in his rather short running career.
Imane was the winner of the first two 5000m running events at the annual IAAF Diamond League.
Moreover, in the final contest of the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Championships, the runner finished for a gold medal.
Cheruiyot, on the other hand, is a veteran runner whose success rate in athletics is incomparable. Representing Kenya in the 2000 Summer Olympics to the Summer Olympics of 2008, she has never let her spectators down.
Making herself known in World Athletics, she bagged the silver medal in the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, while in the next event (2009), her sustained efforts on training brought her a gold medal over the distance of 5000m.
Presently, the experienced runner is the Kenyan record holder over the distance of 5000m, for which she boasts of a personal best of 14 minutes and 20.89 seconds.
In last year’s contest, Cheruiyot won the race title while defeating Sule Utura, the 21-year old Ethiopian middle and long distance runner who was the 2008 World Junior champion over the distance of 5000m.
Occupying the top of the podium place, Cheruiyot prevailed over her traditional rival with a very small margin.
On the men’s side, the showdown was no less thrilling where Merga overdid his British counterpart, Mo Farah, by merely a few seconds.
With all the last year’s stunners coming to participate in this year’s meet as well, the spectators of the race are looking forward to witnessing a close contest in the International New Year’s Eve Run BOclassic meet.
