Question:

Immediate help needed for really sick betta fish!?

Okay, so about a month ago (or longer) I bought my friend's daughter a betta fish. It was doing fine, but about 2 weeks ago I noticed that it was a little chubby. Aw heck, the poor thing is FAT. Then I noticed that one ...gill? or that fan thing seemed to stick out alittle. So I was going to bring down a bottle of metaflix, but she went away for a short time.

I went down there today, and insisted that I immediantly take the fish upstairs to my place, where there is more light so I can look at him. The poor guy appears to have a gapping hole in his head and white stuff around/in it. He doesnt live with any other fish and I have NO idea what it could be. I immediantly put some fungus treatment in the tank, and some water treatment stuff ( his tank was changed recently, from tap water) and plopped in 2 frozen peas. He still eats, but spends most of his days at the bottom of the tank near a particular plant. Please help, I don't know what else to do for this poor fellow and dont want to tell a 6 year-old her pet died.

  1. Well, it looks like your beta fish is sick and you did good that you used medication right away, but you're not sure if medication will work.

I've never seen something like this before and can;t tell you for sure what's wrong. Take your beta fish to the nearest pet store and let them look at it.

I found this website useful for my aquarium, check out

  2. That is definitely one sick fish.  It's swollen like dropsy but it doesn't look like the scales are sticking out.  It looks horribly fat and I would quit feeding it for a few days then resume feeding no more than 2 or 3 pellets daily to start with.  Feeding it peas isn't going to help, first because betta's are carnivores and secondly it doesn't need more food.

The sore doesn't look like fungus, more like some kind of rot.  I would do daily water changes and treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic but I'm not sure at this point there is a lot of hope for it.
