Question:

Immersion heater not working?

We have an immersion heater for the water that runs off the electric, there is a switch with a light on it in the kitchen and a switch beside the water tank with a pull out fuse, 13 amp. When you turn it on in the kitchen the light does not come on and the water doesn't heat. this happened weeks ago but we have oil heating and the water still heats up if you put the heating on so haven't been in a hurry to get it sorted.

Could it just be that a fuse somewhere needs changing or something more serious, I know how to get the fuse out of the switch upstairs but don't even know if there's one in the kitchen or if I'd have to look in the fuse box in the hall, its a bit warm now to have to keep putting the heat on every morning to heat the water. If not just a fuse any ideas on the cost to fix it, if its a big job will have to put it off for another while.

  1. I will not go into the how to & maybe, but have you not just considered changing the13A fuse ? For a known good one ?

  2. could be one of three faults

1  tripped out at the fuse box (main house supply) or fuse in that box

    2 fuse in the switch

    3 thermo defective

all these jobs can be done by a sensible person

but  turn off at mains remember electic shocks can kill

turn off do job turn back on

  3. maybe the thermostat has blown? its a common problem with immersion tanks!

There will be a round box on the top of the tank like the size of a small tea cup..inside is a thin tube with a small box on top. this is the thermostat..they are simple to fit and buy but as with anything i would suggest that you call a plumber.

be aware of hot water coming out of your cold taps..if this happens shut the whole thing down..as your header tank will be brimming with hot water...in the past people have been killed by a burst header tank filled with boiling water becaust the immerssion hasnt regulated hot water correctly ....

just a thought but im not sure..yes you may also have a fuse damaged..just replce the fuses and restrt the system..you cant do mutch damage..but as always i would reccomend gettting  a professional to do it!

    good luck!
