When someone sponsors you for an immigrant visa, does the sponsor need to be a US citizen?

  2. Either a US citizen or a green card holder, but it depends on the relationship. Green card holders can only sponsor spouses and unmarried children. US citizens can also sponsor adult married children, parents and siblings, including married siblings with their spouses and children.

  3. Either a US Citizen or a permanent resident - however, there are various categories the person will fall into that will mark their "place in line." For example, there is NO wait time for a number for the spouse or child of an American citizen. However, there are wait times until a number is available for the sibling of a permanent resident. It is as though the American citizen gets "first dibs" so to speak.
