Question:

Immigrants complaining?

What is your opinion if someone migrated to the United States (legally) from another country, and then all they did was complain about how our country is so backwards and things in their country are so much better. I agree in a sense that a lot of things need to change here, but don't you think it's a little tacky for someone who isn't even from here to be complaining to an American, especially someone who has fought in Iraq?

Or am I being too sensitive?

  1. Compared to most, Americans are not ignorant or arrogant.  We are, as it happens, the best educated people in the world and if you get into our universities, you quickly discover why that is correct.

  2. You know there are "weird" people everywhere and all you can do is ignore them. Of course I agree that you don't have to immigrate to a particular country and stay there if you don't like it. I never understood those people but don't get mad because that doesn't help. I try not to care about such people and I recommend the same to you.

  3. While you might find complaining annoying, it is a fundamental right of communication, and legal immigrants ARE paying taxes just as US Citizens are doing.

Free exchange of ideas is essential for full development and change of the society. Moreover, while information can profoundly help, it cannot hurt: actions, not information, cause damage; the government cannot regulate speech. Depriving a person of information distorts decision making and may prevent essential improvements.

Freedom of thought and expression must be granted unconditionally, because it is necessary for human communication and because it is the universal ability to think that makes us human.

Legal immigrants DO come here, though, not just to better themselves and their lifestyles but to contribute toward the betterment of the country they are living in.  Therefore, they must DO positive things....not just complain and not do.

  4. its annoying but normal.  when my husband first came here he had these huge expectations because hey this is America, you know how the movies exaggerate things.  so at first he was disappointed because it was hard for him to find a good job and he got sick and we got stuck with 6,000 in medical bills. so he talked bad about America at first.  but after a while his homesickness went away and he got a good job and now he loves America more than before he moved.

yeah its annoying but i think its mainly just homesickness.  but if the person never stops complaining after a year or so, then they should probably just go back to their country.  think about it though, if we moved to another country we would probably talk about how much better it is in America, until we got used to the new country then it would settle and we would accept things.

  5. i think they dont have the right to complain about anything about the US when they chose to come here instead of their own country

  6. I went to high school in a small community in Iowa. This community is home to the largest kosher meat packing plant in the world. This community is also home to people from many different cultures, some legal and some illegal. When I was in school we had many russians in our class. They spoke little english and made no attempt to learn more yet they passed each grade and graduated from school because administrators did not know what else to do. When we would try to be friendly we would get brushed off. These kids acted like they were better then us and we owed them. My feelings were that they chose to come here and if they don't like it then they can leave but don't bother complaining. Either adjust and become an american or return to your home country and hate us all you want.

  7. I would either think that they were very young and naive or that perhaps they just have never gotten over the culture shock of living in another country. Some people just never can adapt to a new country.

I would find the "crack" about the US being "backward" as just so ridiculous as to color my perception of everything else they had said.  (And I've lived on 3 different continents in my life...not just visited...but lived.)

As to Americans being "ignorant and arrogant", I've found that there are "ignorant and arrogant" people in every country and the US has about the same percentage of them as anywhere else.

  8. I wonder, do you know the story of old Ned, from the USA civil war ? He was made prisoner and was constantly telling his guardian: "if we, the southerners, had been a few more we would have defeated you from the north"

He was so nagging, that he went high up the chain of command until he faced general grant, who told him: "I give you 10 minutes to swear loyalty to the north or you will be shot !"

Old Ned swore right away. Immediately after, he said to general grant: "but you know, my general, if they, the southerners had been  a few more, they would have defeated us from the north"

Thus, if we become citizens, are we allowed to criticize the USA like those born here ?

  9. that person is probably a habitual complainer

  10. Well, I am sure it goes the same with Americans when they go overseas to visit, they walk around like the own the place, talk loud and show no respect. Its better for immigrants to complain about their place to live then Americans complaining while they are just visiting~!

  11. You're not too sensitive.  Some immigrants (especially some illegal aliens) whining and complaints are way out of line. More than a little tacky.  If they think their country is so much more "advanced" or whatever, let them go home.  When immigrants start in on their rants, simply say, "It was your choice to come here, and you are welcome to return home."
