Immigrating to Scotland..?

really want to move to Scotland and live and work there permanatly. Getting a work or student visa is not possible. How do you go about immigrating there? I have no idea about any of this? Is it legal, and how to I even start the process?

I am from the USA btw and am looking for as much information as I can get before actually contacting their government. Just to get an idea if I would even be able to go through everything. Also, someone told me once before that you need a visa... which kind of visa. Is going to Scotland as a visiter and then just staying there the same thing as immigrating.. I'm totally "dumb" in this area. Thanks guys.

  1. Check this site out: http://www.americanexpats.co.uk/ :-)

  2. First of all the Scottish Government is not able to issue you with any kind of visa. Immigration is controlled by the government of the United Kingdom.

There is a new points based system in the UK which scores based on your education and your salary in your own country.

Go to the British Embassy website in your own country and look for visas to get details of this. This would be a visa to allow you to look for work, you can't move if you can't work and support yourself.

If you go as a visitor you can't just stay there, you would be an illegal immigrant and subject to deportation and a ban from returning.

  3. If you cannot get a student or work visa, you will need to marry a Brit.  If you go as a tourist and stay, then you will be an illegal.  You will not be able to get work and will be deported if they catch you.
