Question:

Immigration for military service?

I was looking at the E4 section in here: http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1323.html

And it says: "13) Alien Recruited Outside of the United States Who Has Served or is Enlisted to Serve in the U.S. Armed Forces;"

Does this mean that I can enlist for the U.S. Armed Forces outside of the United States, and thereby obtain permanent residence status?

  1. you would get the citizenship, but after a couple of years of ACTION in Iraq do not think that it would really be so easy....

  2. Th "Army" would take u, put u in th infantry, if u live pass 6 mos, u will b able to bcome a citizen.  Ur first tour will b about 15 mos in Iraq followed by another tour in Afganistan.  I don't know about th other services.  Ur first enlistment is for 8 years.  So u can sign up for 4 years n do 4 years reserve.

  3. In a recent article ("The Illegal Immigration Threat," DefenseWatch, Jan. 14, 2004), I talked about a 19-year old illegal alien who used a bogus green card to enlist in the Army, and how the Army was going to help facilitate getting him citizen status. (The Army's efforts did result in that soldier being sworn in as a U.S. citizen.) Little did I know at the time that that soldier was literally just the latest tip on a monolithic iceberg.

    The Denver Post article reported:

"[T]he citizenship of 16,031 members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines is listed as 'unknown.' That's about one in 100 active-duty military members who might be U.S. citizens, legal immigrants - or just about anybody else."
