Depends on what country you are from... and what is the relationship between you and your sponsor.  

It would be much faster if petitioner files for parents or children... but for siblings, it may take 10-12 years.

you have to go to the immigration place and fill out papers to whom your requesting and then just  turn it and  from there on  they will be sending you doc. to your house requesting various important doc.  from you and the person you requesting,  untill all doc. are turned in that they ask for then they'll set you up for an appt interview, it take up to a yr or so depending how long the forms are turn in ..
