  1. Are you really sure you want to make the permanent move?  You know you can go to University in the US and take a year in Barcelona (or any other city, for that matter) and not make such a huge committment?  That's how I did it.  I would recommend taking a year abroad, rather than just packing up and moving to a different country.

That said:  Check with the Spanish Consulate nearest your home for information on how to do emigrate.  I'm pretty sure they would have the information.  Know, first of all, that beaurocracy in Spain is crazy, but if you bite the bullet and are willing to put up with all the paperwork (which I'm sure is duplicated and triplicated all over the place, and which I understand changes almost daily) then you will find it a very rewarding experience.

By the way, Spanish isn't likely to be the important language for you.  I'm not sure about the Universities in Barcelona, but I think you'll want to familiarize yourself with Catalán, as well.  They MAY teach in it.  I found no problems with using Spanish with anyone, there, but I don't know about the University situations...You would have to check that out.  Once there, you would probably pick it up, too.

  2. Well...I moved here in December 2007 to Madrid ...but I took the semi-easy route...met someone while traveling here and got married in March....thats the easiest...there was some paperwork I had to have done before arriving here however....

I would suggest you go to a Spanish consulate close to you and find out what you need.

    Good luck.

  3. spain is interesting but be aware of the cultural change

sorry to sound like I am generalizing but they have a lot of really narrow minded people there who are quite openly racist and can say very hurtful things that will shock foreigners who are not used to it like many americans for example who are very used to political correctness when it comes to racism.

as an american you will be ok, I doubt any one will attack u or anything but is a culture that is hard to deal with and the people are very very closed, sort of hard to crack into their culture and be allowed in.
