  2. You must not live close to the beach. Most surfers that dont live close to the beach cant spend a whole lot on gas.Find a surfer friend that lives close to you, and carpool. It will turn out to be fun.Thats where the term"surfing safari" came fom in the old beach boys song. Its definately worth buying if you love the sport. Its a easy sport to love. The question about the wax.Well waxing is used for your feet to grip the board better ...without a waxed board you will find that you slip off the surface of it while trying to plant your feet for a turn,or just staying on.Most surfers put a light coat of sand on the wax once they get in the water(cold water hardens the wax more). You want to wax the board so the wax developes a beed like surface. If its the first wax job on the board, you may need more than one bar of wax. You can leave the wax on the board as long as you keep it in the shade or turned upside down. If you want to remove the wax, just let it sit in direct sunlight and use a plastic scraper(comb) and scrape the soft melting wax off.Thats a tedious process. Ther is an alternative from wax, however. You can buy a product called "gorilla grip" its a adhesive strip that you apply on the board, but i would get an experienced surfer to help you apply it,since its kind of permanent, but it works really well and you might like the results as appose to wax. Please, swim or surf near a manned lifeguard station. If you cant...then surf with a friend.

  3. If you just took lessons they really should have covered that!  A normal fiberglas or plastic coat board gets really slippery when its wet; the wax helps you stay on the board!  It gives the 'grip'.  If you've been using a soft-board you usually do not wax those.  As a beginner you might try finding one of those and then not have to worry about waxing.

If you are only surfing half-a-dozen times a year you might consider simply renting.  Depends on your location.  I know that here in Southern California there are board-rentals right on the boardwalk in places like Huntington Beach.

And you might also consider body-boarding instead of stand-up surfing.  It's significantly easier, can be done in surf conditions that aren't ideal for surfing, and the boards are mostly way less expensive.  If you're only going a few times a year that might still give you the 'fun factor' without the expense...or getting to the beach and finding the waves aren't good enough, etc.

  4. the reason surfers wax their boards is for grip, the wax provides friction between the rider and the board so it means they dont slip off.

buy a surfboard!!! even if you only go to the beach 6 times  a year its awesome fun and then you wont have to go to the hassle of borrowing or hiring a board. if you love it then spend some money on it!!!
