Imogen Bankier, the first Scottish silver medallist at the BWF World Championships wants to win more
Scotland’s Imogen Bankier, who is the country’s first female shuttler to clinch a silver medal at the BWF World Championships, is determine to work hard to win more in major events including the 2012 London Olympics.
World Number 16 Anglo-Scottish couple of Bankier and Chris Adcock stunned everyone by crushing every opponent in their way towards the Mixed Doubles final, where they lost to China’s fifth seeded couple of Zhao Yunlei and Zhang Nan.
However, the silver medal is a remarkable achievement for the newly established couple, which was formed less than a year ago. They have been playing wonderful badminton for the last few months and they made their mark at the Wembley Arena by entertaining the local crowd with their best performance.
The two-time national champion of Scotland in the Mixed Doubles category is happy with the achievement at the world meet, where all top shuttlers contested for glory.
Bankier said, “I’m absolutely delighted although I don’t really think it has sunk in yet. I’m just extremely happy because all my family and friends were there. It was really like being on home ground.”
Talking about the Chinese opposition in the final battle, Bankier said, “They stepped up their game and are very experienced, winning many titles. On the day they were better than us.”
Now, the next major target for Bankier is the 2012 London Olympics which are set to be held at the same venue where the Scottish shuttler won the silver medal. She also expressed that she is going on the right track in the preparation for Olympic Games.
While talking about the 2011 World Championships at the Wembley Arena and also the Olympic Games, Bankier said, “The atmosphere was electric. Hopefully all the GB players will up their training and it will be a good Olympic year.”
She is quite optimistic that by working hard in the right direction, the couple will be among the top favourites for the medal at the London Olympics, next year.
