Impact of injury of Casey Stoner over the 2012 championship – MotoGP Special
Casey Stoner of Repsol Honda faced an unfortunate injury in the last year of his MotoGP career.
We believe it had a devastating impact over the championship of 2012 because he was one of the worthy riders who could have won the championship title in the current season, with the other two being Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha Factory Racing and Dani Pedrosa
of Repsol Honda.
Stoner faced a huge crash in the qualifying session of Indianapolis Grand Prix. The crash was so huge that he was immediately taken to the hospital. Luckily he escaped without a fracture in his bone but he faced some torn ligaments.
He confirmed that he will race at the Indianapolis GP and managed to finish at the 4th position. He was the third contender of the championship who could have won the championship title but he was called back to Australia to get his ankle treated. Although
it was not shocking news for his fans but it took the crisp out of the sport.
Stoner said, “It’s definitely disappointing; it’s not what we wanted, especially in my last season. We’re coming into a few left hand circuits, and circuits that I prefer to be honest. In the later part of the season you never know what could have happened,
but we’ll keep pushing. I don’t regret it [racing at Indianapolis]. I’ve never really followed people’s orders with things like that in the past. But now, if another accident was to happen it would be huge damage. It’s just frustrating to thing what we could
have done without this injury.”
Stoner has announced his retirement from the sport for the next 2013 season. He told that he did not want to continue the sport with no interest therefore he is leaving when he has some interest left in MotoGP.
We feel that Stoner’s injury was actually the injury for MotoGP. Although close battles between Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa have kept the sport lively and Rossi’s efforts to improve his Ducati were adding to the interest but the huge gap between the top
two positions and the remaining positions was depriving the interest of many fans. We want to see close competitions just like the other auto sports such as Formula 1 where pit stop strategies change the scenario of the sport.
We do understand that it would be like changing the sport by introducing the tyres which wear out forcing the rider to take stops but the title war should at least be between three riders not one or two as it affects the charm of the sport.
