The greatest insight I ever gained on this topic came from reading an article by Edward S. Deevey Jr.   ~ I will have to look for that book of essays and the title of Deevey's article, but he was a human ecologist who wrote extensively about the history of human population growth.  And the history of human population growth is a good indicator of the effect of technology and its effects on the environment.
