  2. Sounds like a homework or test question.  During that period of time many people believed that man was meant to subdue nature for the betterment of man kind.  Imperialism had little to do with the process except it might have accelerated the subjugation by political organization.

    The common theme of the process was the destruction of forest and other wild lands.  Sometimes this was done to create crop lands but timber harvesting was also a significant impact.
