Import fees? USA to UK how can i tell if i will be charged?

i want to order something off an american website, it says they deliver internationally.i live in northern ireland. how can i be sure i wont be charged import fees, or tell how much i will be charged?

  1. Ask your local Customs and Excise. they are very helpful and will explain the rules to you.


  2. well, if the item is worth more than £18, it's likely import charges will apply. import duty varies from one classification of goods to the next so i wouldn't like to say how much exactly. the following link gives a list of commonly imported goods that might help if your item is there.

    failing that ring the uk tariff classification helpline on 01702366077, they'll classify your item over the phone and tell you exactly what duty rate if any will apply.

    note: whatever percentage you find for your item, vat at 17.5% will always apply to the combination of cost of goods, plus shipping, plus whatever the duty is.

  3. typically 3% +17.5% vat +admin charges but check with customs and excises either online or by phone.
