  1. one example:

puma, cougar, florida panther, mountain lion= all the same animal! By using its scientific name, Felis concolor, scientists know exactly which animal is being talked about.

  2. The main importance is that when you're talking to other people about a creature, they'll know what you're talking (or writing) about.

Of secondary importance is a possibility that "related" creatures might be used in similar ways.  For example, food can be obtained from wheat seeds.  If you were interested in developing other crops, you might want to look at the seeds of other grasses that are in the same genus as wheat.  Or -- you might try crossing wheat with some of those grasses, to obtain a hybrid that would have good edible seeds like wheat, but might have good qualities from the other grass such as disease resistance or salt tolerance.

  3. Biology is a very vast subject. There are more than 2 million species of animals and 0.5 million species of plants. A person can't study all of them. It is because of this reason that organisms have been classified according to their features. This helps the people to study these organisms with more depth. This also helps to differentiate between different organisms.

  4. The importance of classification cannot be overstated.

Take a trivial example -  if your doctor cannot identify a parasite, how will he/she treat you correctly ?

In agriculture, forestry etc. are multi-billion dollar enterprises. Here, classification is all important. Entomology deals with the study of insects, and is extremely important in agricultural pest control etc.

The inter-relationships of species also reveals evolutionary connections.

Taxonomy (the field of biological classification) is to biology what the Dewey decimal system is to a library.
