Well its importance is:

It gets you familier with the building blocks of our surroundings,

get to know more about them, how do they react, how they combine with other substances, under what conditions

how they are related to each other.

Also Chemistry is one of the major subjects that you need to enter medicine, engineering, nanotechnology.
