  1. I'm not sure about the best career to choose as far as the importance of nonverbal communication, but here are a few in which it can be critical:

Doctor: Can you imagine the possible repercussions of a doctor sending the wrong (or premature) message to a patient or his/her family, especially in a high-pressure situation such as life/death situations?

Policeman: Appearing to threaten a suspect (or even a victim) could get an officer killed or escalate what should have been an easily managed situation into a crisis.

Judge / Attorney: If a judge or other officer of the court shows (inappropriate) bias toward a defendant, it could result in a serious miscarriage of justice with a defendant's life put on the line.

Social worker / Psychologist / Psychiatrist: I lumped these together as they are all three in the business of helping people correct or modify behaviors that are dangerous to themselves or others. If one were to communicate disgust, hostility, anger, etc, it would severely compromise his/her ability to do a job and perhaps even put his/her life on the life. Imagine a social worker sent to examine a child's home situation, and that worker is unaware that feelings of disgust and hostility are being shown toward a parent who is already threatened... Social workers have been attacked and/or killed in situations like that.

    Hope that helps. : )
