  1. The appendix is a vestigial organ, meaning that it use to be a functioning organ in humans but it isn't anymore. It is also proof of human evolution. Scientists believe that the appendix was once a part of the intestines that carried cellulose-eating bacteria so that we could digest plants. If you take a look at a herbivore's intestines, they have a longer intestine part in the same area as humans' appendix for they do still have the bacteria to digest cellulose.

Now the appendix doesn't do much of anything except have some illness fighting power. When you get appendicitis, it is infected with either bacteria or something else and you have to get it taken out. Other than that, it doesn't provide sufficient help.

  2. You are probably referring to the veriform appendix (there are a number located throughout the body) that is a tubular offshoot of the first part of the large intestine (cecum). Lymphoid follicles are heavily concentrated in the wall of the appendix and being rich in lymphoid cells, it plays a role in the immune system.  It, along with peyers patches (clusters of lymphoid follicles located in the wall of the small intestine) work to destroy bacteria to prevent these pathogens from breaching the intestinal wall and they also generate "memory" lymphocytes for long term immunity.

  3. Doctors don't know for sure.  The best guess is the appendix serves some bodily functions before you are born and other organs aren't fully formed or functional yet.

  4. It provides abdominal surgeons with a constant income stream.
