  1. "Liberty Enlightening the World" (the actual name of the sculpture) was a gift from France to the United States in 1886.  It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, as the tablet in Liberty's left hand indicates with the date "IV July MDCCLXXVI." (Apparently it was delivered ten years late.)

The internal structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the guy who also designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris.  The appearance of the statue is based on Libertas, the ancient pagan Roman goddess of liberty. It was designed by French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi.

The famous poem by Emma Lazarus ("Give me your tired, your poor...") that is associated with the statue was not attached to it until approximately twenty years after the statue was raised.

  2. when foreigners saw the statue they knew they were home free from alot of stuff they had left overseas then. it was a new time for them to build a new home and that is why they were happy.

  3. When I see the see the Statue of Liberty I see the souls of many grateful people that are ancestors and descendants of the good people who helped form America and what we stand for.  We Americans didn't come here under the most perfect of conditions, but many left wars and persecution. Many came here as slaves who were sold by their own people.  Many came here to escape poverty and to have a better life.  Anyone here no matter of race, creed, gender, and sexual preference has a chance to become successful with hard work and clean living.  Education is available to anyone that actively seeks it.  We are not perfect, but as the saying goes, "America, love it or leave it!"  I still shed a tear when I see Lady Liberty and I am proud.

  4. freedom!

  5. It is there to remind you of your debt to France.  The French sailed into Jamestown habour at just the right moment to force the main British admiral to surrender rather than lose his men at the end of the American revolutionary insurgency, this led to the British revolutionary forces (the colonists) together w. the French forces gaining victory over the British in their own colonies.

Sadly history has been re-written and propaganda has prevailed since but the truth is important and yes there is a u in harbour.. it's English.
