  1. before you move to new york to persue acting as a hobby, you might want to investigate the city as a place you want to live. you can enjoy the "hobby" of theatre anywhere. especially if you're considering it as a hobby, you might enjoy going to a smaller locale. i've been in theatre since i was 8, professionally since '99, and i've been to new york...i was over it after about 4 hours! but that's me...i've moved to chicago and find the people, city, public transportation, cost of living, and availability of theatre (of all kinds) much more readily available. investigate!

  2. There are tons of local acting groups and community theaters in NYC. Just google them. I'm sure they advertise like crazy.

  3. Honestly it sounds like a bad idea.  Why go to the one place that competition is the most fierce to pursue a 'hobby'?  BTW, saying that could get you jumped there too.  People go to NY to pursue their passion, their dream and to hear you describe it as a mere hobby would truly offend those that are living off thier blood, sweat and tears to do this.

People all over participate in local community theatre as a hobby, why not stay where you are?  It's great that you enjoy it, but why go to NY?  Leave that for the true dreamers.
