Importing Yamaha R1 from Japan?

Im importing a Yamaha R1 from Japan. What are the documentation or process that I need in order to get it here, in the State Of Maryland.

  1. I looked at bringing in a grey market sport bike from the UK and by the time I had to pay for crating, shipping, tarrifs, etc it was going to be over $1000.


  2. Getting the bike here will not be much of a problem.  You'll need to get paper work from US Customs for declaration and tariff.  Who ever does the shipping will know what has to be done.  If you are in the military, the Logistics staff will also know.

    Riding the bike after it is here could be a problem.  If the bike was not built for import to the US it may not have DOT and EPA approved status, equipment, etc...  In other words, it is a gray market bike.  Hence getting the bike registered would be problematic if not impossible.

  4. I know this isn't much help, but that sounds like a huge pain for a bike that we already have here in the States... Good luck anyway.
