Impressive Defensive performance leads Green Bay Packers to 23-10 win over Chicago Bears
Green Bay Packers continued their domination of arch rivals Chicago Bears with another victory defeating the visitors 23-10 in an action packed encounter on Thursday September 13, 2012 at the Lambeau Field.
With this latest defeat Chicago Bears have now failed to taste victory over the Packers since 2007 at Lambeau Field and they now have to wait most likely until the next season for another shot.
Unlike previous Packers victories it was not the offence that took the plaudits this time but the defence which completely shackled Chicago Bears and their quarterback Jay Cutler while an unconventional play and Mason Crosby’s three field goals helped Green
Bay to outscore their rivals.
This was Green Bay’s first victory of the season and their response was great to see after suffering a defeat in the week 1 game to the San Francisco 49ers.
Chicago Bears on the other hand were brought back down to earth after they completely pummelled the Indianapolis Colts in the first week.
Speaking about the defeat Chicago Bears defensive stalwart and linebacker, Brian Urlacher said:
"Maybe we're not as good as we thought we were. We've got a long ways to go."
While head coach Lovie Smith expressed his disappointment with the display and said that his team can play much better than they did here.
"Of course it was a disappointing effort. I thought we would play better. We're better than we showed tonight."
However, nothing should be taken away from the Packers defence who delivered a text book performance.
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was sacked seven times with three and a half sacks being made by Packers Clay Matthews while his passes were intercepted four times including two interceptions by Tramon Williams.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said:
"We got kicked in the (rear end) four days ago. And we were motivated."
Green Bay’s special teams unit shocked fans and the Bears alike in the second quarter. Late in the second quarter the Packers lined up for what looked like a normal field goal attempt but punter Tim Masthay who lines up as holder during field goals took
the snap and passed the ball to back up tight end Tom Crabtree who scored the game’s first touchdown.
A much improved Bears offence did not deliver as wide receiver Brandon Marshall was shadowed throughout the game and he failed to convert his one good chance for a touchdown early in the third quarter dropping the catch from a perfect Cutler pass.
Rodgers sent his only touchdown pass early in the fourth to veteran Donald Driver to bring the score up to 23-3.
The Packers remained comfortably ahead before Cutler finally sent a touchdown pass late on to Kellen Davis to make it 23-10.
However, no further scoring took place from both sides sending Green Bay to their first victory of the 2012/13 season.
