Impressive swims of Geoff Huegill and Naoya Tomita in Stockholm: 2011 FINA World Cup
Olympic medallist, Geoff Huegill of Australia and Japan’s young athlete, Naoya Tomita came out vibrantly and clinched their own titles at the 2011 FINA World Cup in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday, October 15. The session of the meet conducted Men’s 50m butterfly
and 200m breast-stroke events.
Geoff Huegill got-off to a flying start in his first attempt of the World Series when he produced a record-breaking swim in the arena by posting a winning time of 22.70 seconds to clinch the Men’s 50m butterfly title. Huegill was the silver medallist in
both 4x100m IM and 100m butterfly finals at the 2000 Olympic Games, in Sydney. In addition, he won many titles for his country in all major swimming competitions such as World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Pan Pacific Championships and Goodwill Games.
Meanwhile, Tyler Mcgill of United States picked silver medal with an inspiring mark of 23.58 seconds and Lars Frolander of Sweden settled for bronze title in a time of 23.76 seconds. In addition, Tiago Venancio of Portugal finished fourth with a time of
23.87 seconds and Cheol Chang Gyu of Korea settled for fifth place in a time of 24.04 seconds.
Colombia’s Pontus Flodqvist earned sixth place honours with a time of 24.28 seconds, while Austria’s Martin Spitzer got seventh position with a time of 24.30 seconds. Finally, Sebastian Holmberg of Colombia claimed eighth position with a time of 24.36 seconds.
In the Men’s 200m breast-stroke, Japan’s Naoya Tomita thrashed out her rivals, Germany’s Marco Koch and compatriot, Kazuki Otsuka by posting a matchless time of 2 minutes and 05.13 seconds. Koch finished with silver medal in a time of 2 minutes and 05.25
seconds, while Otsuka earned bronze medal in a time of 2 minutes and 06.36 seconds.
New Zealand’s Glenn Snyders finished fourth with a time of 2 minutes and 08.81 seconds, whereas, Michael Brown of Canada settled for fifth place with a mark of 2 minutes and 09.11 seconds. Great Britain’s James Kirton earned sixth place honours by posting
a time of 2 minutes and 10.42 seconds, while Hungary’s Akos Molnar picked seventh position in a time of 2 minutes and 10.71 seconds.
Canada’s Andrew Poznikoff earned eighth position in a time of 2 minutes and 12.58 seconds. In the end, the best swimmers were awarded accolades and cash prizes after the session’s completion. The third round of the 2011 FINA World Series is set to take place
in Moscow today.
