Question:

Improper fraction help?

I have 37/8, and 8 goes into 37 4 times, and you have 3 left over, so it's 4 1/8? So confusing. And if you could help with this one too: 8.3 - 10.7, so it will be negative, so if you could explain how to do that, that would be great!

I'm not expecting free answers, I want to know how to do it for next time.

  1. 37/8 simplifies to 4 and 5/8 8 goes into 37 4 times with 5 left over not 3, 8 multiplied by 4 = 32, 37 - 32 = 5

that is where you get the 5/8

for 8.3 - 10.7, multiply the whole thing by ten so its 83-107=-24

now put the decimal place back so its -2.4, or use a calculator :)

  2. It would be 4 3/8  whatever is left over becomes your new numerator.  If you end up with an improper fraction in your answer you have to go back and check your work.  Hope that helps you. Goodluck.
