Hello, I would like to ask for help to improve the quality of my voice when singing? I have practised over the months and have gotten slightly better, however I do not know how to practise effectivly. I would rather not take lessons cause it costs money and I barely make enough for myself. Can someone help me please?

  2. Work on breath support and posture. those are big things that many people fail to pay attention to and their tone and all around singing suffers. Make sure those aspects are properly performed. Look up proper vowel shapes and such. It really is a help to have someone to guide you to make sure you're doing things right, but it's ok if you can't afford lessons. Just keep practicing and listen to good recordings and watch videos of accomplished singers. Those things will really assist you in becoming a better singer.

  3. As my teacher said: "practice makes permanent". Maybe you can't take regular lessons- but as you learn, you will want to at least talk to a voice teacher/coach/struggling graduate student... once in a while to be sure you are not picking up bad habits or hurting your vocal instrument. Also will be able to give you pointers, exercises, and warm-ups.

Other thoughts to help improve quality: (sorry-- this got longish...)

    - If you are a smoker- quit. This is one of the WORST things for a singing voice.

    - If you are ever around a lot of second hand smoke- drink extra water.

    - Keep hydrated while singing to help avoid strain. Water takes 20 min to go through your system. When you exhale- you breathe out water. Drink lots of water.

    - Do warm-ups before jumping in and rehearsing specific songs. Sing up and down the scale in sets of five notes (NOT full octaves at the beginning) in your comfortable range for about 5-7 min. (This is like stretching out before lifting weights or doing aerobics)

    - Breathing. Build up your breath support with swimming under water, or just holding a very deep breath as long as you can while watching TV. (Don't overdo this and pass out though!)

    - Posture. Stand straight backed against a wall. If that feels uncomfortable, you now know you have a slouching problem.

Posture supports breath, breath supports voice.

    - Look straight up. Open your mouth wide. Now lower your head, keeping your mouth open. Stop lowering your head when your jaw feels uncomfortable. Close your mouth. In theory- your head is now properly centered and 'open' on your neck. This can help keep your neck relaxed when singing, and helps keep the voice from straining over 'break' points.

    - If you find you 'look up' to reach high notes, or look down to hit low notes; of find high notes=soft, lower notes =loud (or vice versa)these is a bad habit to get into and actually makes the notes overall sound thin and reedy. Awareness can help you stop doing this (if you are)

    - "A supported voice" does not mean sing louder. It means you have the breath to get through a phrase of music.

Hope any of these help! Good luck!
