Question:

Improving at Go?

I am talking about the board game, also known as weiqi and paduk/baduk. I am somewhere between 10 and 15 kyu. I really want to improve, but I don't know exactly how. Should I work on opening, endgame, life and death, joseki...you get the picture. If anyone knows any specific order you're supposed to study, that would be great. Also, what should I look at to study (pro games, books, etc.). I try playing, but I don't think it's helping me improve much if I don't understand my mistakes. Thanks in advance!

  1. I don't play Go, but around here (Arlington, VA area), there's a group that gets together informally and they do all sorts of games.  Many of them are even in rated games.  If you poke around resources such as libraries, schools, and colleges, you may be able to find such a group in your area.  Such a group will likely improve your games.  Else, try googling Go strategies, or going to a book store for Go books.  Good luck

  2. I've always felt that the best way to improve your game is to play against people who are just above your current level.  During the game, keep track of when you are winning or losing, and you will get a feel for which part of your game is the weakest.  Studying a book that helps you improve the weakest part of your game (which will change as you progress through the ranks: sometimes it will be the endgame, sometimes the opening, etc.) is a great way to improve your playing level and expose yourself to a whole new group of opponents.

Also try submitting your games to the Go Teaching Ladder at http://gtl.xmp.net/, where you can get your game reviewed by players just above your own level.
