Improving volleyball skills and perfecting my technique (read description)?

Hello, all! I plan on trying out for volleyball for my middle school's varsity team next year (I will be in eighth grade, I was on JV this year) and I would like to know some pointers on improving my skills and perfecting my technique. I'm getting practice right now, because I am playing YMCA volleyball, but my last game is on Saturday! From then on, I won't be getting much practice on an actual volleyball court. Also, YMCA volleyball is not very competitive, I'm sorry to say, so I'm not really getting much skill and technique down as I would like to. Things I need help on are:

- Finding a place to practice

- Having more consistency on my overhand serves (I usually serve underhand in games because I know I can do it)

- More control when I set

- Tips on improving bumps (My bumps are really good, I would just like a few pointers)

My best position on the court is on the back row in the middle. I kind of have a habit of diving all over the place, lol. Answer away!

  1. your jv team must have sucked if you made it with an under hand serve. and back row middle is usually where the libero go's if she goes in for the middle. back row middle is not a position its just a place on the court.

  3. there are lots of conditioning type things you can do off the court. the best research is on the web.

as for serving..consistency comes w/ time and practice. my suggestion would be to serve overhand all the time. i served over hand in middle school and it helped out to do my practicing  there for when i moved on to high school and college volleyball.

there are balls you can buy specifically for setting. they are more weighted. the idea is that you practice w/ that ball so when you use the normal weighted ball..your hands are much more lighter and stronger as a result. hand position in setting is key. not only that, but your whole body. if your center is off, it's going to throw the rest of you into a loop..unless your god's gift to setting..which most middle school girls aren't.

passing is all about getting your butt down..as low as you can. keeping a good center too and a flat platform (arms). we used to have a million drills..but one was to lie on the floor..while someone smacked and then threw the ball up while we had to get up and pass it to the setters position. lots of drills there you could find online too.

AND middle back is a freaking position..and yes it is a place on the court..but it's also a position. (that wasn't for you, that was for the other gal that "answered" previously). that was where i played..middle front and middle back..loved it. keep practicing and you'll do well!

    hope this helps!
