Imran Tahir’s game not over says South Africa team doctor Mohammed Moosajee - ICC World Cup 2011
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 received a disappointing shock when it was confirmed that their ace spinner Imran Tahir had broken his thumb in a game against England on Sunday. However, it has been confirmed by the cricket management of South Africa that Imran will not be
called back from the World Cup since it is the thumb on his left hand that has been injured, which means that his bowling hand is still intact.
As of now a replacement for Tahir has not been called in, which means that the management wants him to play for the national team in the later stages of the tournament. Speaking on the state of Tahir, the Proteas team doctor Mohammad Moosajee said, “Cricket
South Africa’s (CSA) medical committee has studied X-rays of Imran’s finger and recommended that he does not play for at least 10 days.”
However, it has been reported that the selectors would decide whether http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Imran-c64193 can play against India or not today. On Thursday Tahir bowled well in the nets but he was clearly seen in pain while trying to bat and field. The risk right now is that if he plays
against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 and is struck again on the same thumb it could end his World Cup for good, which is something the South Africans would not want.
However, one thing is for sure that Imran Tahir is going to stay with the team for ten more days and if the team physician feels that his injury is healing, he would definitely be in South Africa’s playing eleven in the knock-out stages of the tournament.
“As things stand now, Imran’s tournament is not over and he is still a very important part of our plans,” said Moosajee.
The Proteas opener Hashim Amla, has stressed that Imran’s absence in the clash against India will not defocus the team. He reiterated that Tahir was a class act and was a great addition to the South African outfit.
Amla believed that there was enough depth in the South African squad to replace Tahir if in case his injury doesn’t heal in time. Spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Johan-Botha-c67173 is expected to play in place of Tahir in their next fixture. Botha failed to make the team in the matches
against England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753. All-rounder Albie Morkel is the strongest candidate to get a call to replace Tahir for the World Cup in case it is finally decided to send Tahir back home.
Morkel was not picked for the 15 member World Cup squad because of poor form however, the player seems to be on a road to redemption as he scored an unbeaten knock of 71 runs off just 27 balls in the Titans’ Pro20 semi-final, against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Cape-Cobras-c776. He also took
two wickets in the clash.
