  1. I hate to sound like a jerk, but what you're asking sounds like  trying to learn to swim without water.  You need a live training partner for any martial art.

  2. You need a partner, You can use a dummy to up your power on the take downs. but in order to train take downs and what not you need a partner.

  3. you need a partener but if one is not available watch videos or do simualation exercises suck as tire fliping just to name one(look at some of the ufc fighters workout to see what i mean)

  4. The simple answer is go join a grappling class.  Anything else you try will lack the hugely important aspect of feedback - how will you know whether what you are doing is helping?  Sorry but you have to seek some instruction here

  5. There are exercises you can do to improve your ground game, but to really learn opponent control, body mechanics, timing, and technique you need another person to work with.

You can take a lot away from books and videos, but nothing is the same as having a coach.  There is just too much in groundwork that doesn't work at all unless you do it exactly right - for one tiny example; maing sure the opponent's thumb is turned correctly for an arm bar is vital.  Elbow has to be pointed down, thumb up - otherwise all you are doing is bending the arm in a natural direction, rather than "breaking" the elbow.  It's the little things  that matter.

That said, if you have no option currently, but you have some training you can still get your mental game right.  Work on flexibility, neck and core strength, do some solo-shoots and pretend you have the single, double, etc.  Also, "roll-solo" - imagine you are in a grappling scenario and go through all of the motions you need to pull off a submission or escape one.  It's not the same as partner work, but it will at least keep your mind in the game and your body semi-used to doing the moves.

I'd really try to connect with someone in your town who will roll with you.  Use the internet to find a school that has some grappling classes, or find someone who is on a local wrestling team that wants to work out a couple times a week.  It will be good for both parties.

    Good luck.

  6. Apart from joining a good club then dvds, videos or plain old fashioned visualization techniques :)***

  7. I agree with the others that it's really difficult to work on grappling without a partner, but if you have no other choice, I would learn some basic wrestling drills (sit-outs, rolls, penetration stepping, etc.) so that you can at least pratice to get your movements smooth for when you roll live

I also personally  aim for the "use your legs as though they're arms, your feet as though they're hands" philosophy, so I practice picking things up and manipulating them with my feet as I go through my day (eg. flicking light switches, picking things up off the floor instead of bending over, opening and closing doors, moving small pices of furniture)

The more dexterity you have in your legs, the better your guard will be
