In 1700's for example, how did they draw maps with the shape of countries as there was no form or airal views!

there where no forms of air travel, baloon, flight, nothing, so how could they draw world maps with the shapes of the countries!?!?

they used compasses to see which way the coast line lay , taking a new reading at every turn
