In 1939, did students switch rooms for classes?

I am writing a story about world war ii for school. I am encountered with a problem because I do not know if most high school students switched rooms for different classes, like most students do now.

no they didnt, they had classes for clever average and the dunce groups. no offence but that the only word i can think of using with out the evil 'r' word.
