It was off course 402 kilometers of it's intended landing  because astronaut Malcolm  Scott Carpenter  got distracted when he accidentally bumped into the side panel of the fuselage, causing what appeared  to be a burst of glowing fireflies outside the shuttle, which were really particles of frozen ice being broken loose from the outer fuselage in their reaction to zero gravity ~inadvertently solving an unknown scientific theory.
