  2. I very much doubt it was possible for the same reasons that apply today. Some roses, a few, have very characteristic flowers and can be identified from the flower head alone. Whether this is possible when the flower has dried and some colour is lost I know not, but it will make it more difficult.

    Most roses have similar colours to many other varieties and it was (and is) impossible to tell the variety by the flower head alone.

    What is more intriguing for me is why you are asking this question. For a book?
