In '68, Dion sang "Abraham, Martin and John"?

We're trying to figure out the time line of when the Bobby Kennedy verse was added - if Martin died April 5, '68, and Bobby June 6, '68, when was the original song written and how soon after Bobby died was it added? I was 10 when that song came out and I seem to remember it was still being played on the radio when the Bobby verse was added. Anyone a music history buff that can help answer?
