In 500 years will the human race be in dystopia or utopia?

My my, what a pessimistic bunch.  I'm going to go with history on this one, and say that in 500 years humanity's descendants will be much better off than we are now.  I say "humanity's descendants" because with the _exponential_ growth of science and technology, some are predicting within a century that mankind will hit a technological singularity and that we will go through a period of hyper-evolution into a posthuman species.

As for the Mayan calendar, that's been pretty solidly debunked.  See 2nd link below.

I doubt that it will. We aren't now, and never have been in either of those two extremes as a whole species. Humanity seems to self-correct when heading for either of the two extremes.

In reference to Michael's previous response, it is evident that the Eloi have already arrived.  I suspect that in 500 years, the world will be superficially much different than it is today, and yet much the same in all ways that matter to the human experience.  That includes the ironic observation that most people will still peer into the future even when they are unable to see themselves in the present, and they will try to find there the very meaning in their lives that lies all about them.  Plus c'est change, c'est plus le meme chose...
