  1. You won't in grade 6. I didn't disect anything until grade 9 in highschool.

Even then, all specimens are so well treated and preserved with phameldahyde, they barely remind you of what it used to be when alive.  When you do disect something, treat the animal/fish with respect, it gave its life so you can learn about it.

  2. In some schools you do, but I have always heard that you don't HAVE to...you can politely look on OR do alternative independent work.  Teachers are pretty sensitive to "weak stomachs" (I don't blame you at all)....just the smell of the preservative is very offensive to me---but IF it is part of your 6th grade curriculum--just talk to your teacher privately beforehand and I'm sure that something can be worked out.

    Good luck.

  3. no. i had to dissect a frog in 7th grade. . sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it's required.

  4. I didnt until I was in 7th but we did ervything online.

  5. We did dissect cow's eyes. Its not that gross, don't worry....

  6. I'm going into 9th grade, and I haven't had to disect anything.  Where I am, it's illegal.

  7. Biology is the only class where you'll dissect something. Many schools now offer a virtual dissection - you take apart the animal in a computer program, instead.

It's actually pretty interesting, and if the smell bothers you (it is a little nauseating), bring a little vaseline in a small container and put some under your nose, it'll help block the smell. If they let you bring filter masks, that's good too.

Since dissection subjects are costly, you'll often work in a group, so if the group gets credit and you don't have to cut anything, volunteer to be the person writing the report or drawing the pictures. You'll find that guys often want to do the dissecting, so find a group of guys and ask to be the writer.

We had to dissect a worm and a frog in the 7th grade, and a fetal pig, sheep's heart, and cow's eye in 9th grade.

The worst was the fetal pig - there's a way to make it oink by inserting a pipette into the nostril. The day after we finished the experiment, they took all the pigs away... and we had pork sandwiches for lunch in the cafeteria. No one ate.

  8. no.... i didn't until 8th grade

  9. No. You probably won't until high school

  10. Our classes didn't have any dissection until the 7th grade.  However, you can usually find ways out of it.  They generally don't have one frog or worm or whatever per person, so they'll assign groups to do the dissection.  What I used to do was find someone who really likes cutting stuff up, get in a group with them, and then announce that I'll be happy to write up all the notes/do the worksheet as long as I don't have to do any cutting.  Then everyone's happy.

  11. for me 7th grade. It was a worm, owl pellet, and frog. But it was really cool though... the only nasty thing is the smell...
