In 8-ball, if you sink the the 8 ball on the opening break do you win or lose the game?

I've been told both but which is correct.

Depending on which rule set you are playing by, both can be correct.  I tend to play under BCA (world-standardized) rules.  The appropriate rule for this situation is as follows.

4.8   8-BALL POCKETED ON THE BREAK

If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, breaker may ask for a re-rack or have the 8-ball spotted and continue shooting. If the breaker scratches while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, the incoming player has the option of a re-rack or having the 8-ball spotted and begin shooting with ball in hand behind the head string.

Now, we all know that you can't spot balls on a coin-op table.  This is why most people play an 8-ball on the break as a win, even on open tables.  Most people just became used to the bar box method and never questioned it from then on.

99.9% win Very strict rules you spot it

If you call off break and dont make it you give up table to other player

Its not a shot to try for but looks good if you make it

You win if the cue ball stays on the table.  If you scratch, you lose.

You must sink the 8-ball AFTER all other balls (of your catagory, solids or stripes) are sunk.

It depends on where you're playing.  If you're playing bar pool on a coin-operated table, making the 8 on the break is a win, unless you scratch, in which case, you lose.  In tournament pool, any team, or singles tournament I've played in anyway, it is not a win.  The shooter has the choice of either spotting the 8-ball and playing on, or having his opponent re-rack.

Making the '8' ball on the break is a win in most organized pool leagues if the cue ball does not scratch in a pocket or goes off the table. You do NOT have to call the '8' when you break. It doesn't matter what pocket it goes into.

One league I played... if you made the '8' on the break... the '8' stays down... but you have to run out one of the group of balls... the stripes or the solids. If you DO run out one of the groups then you WIN the game. If you fail to run out a group then the '8' comes up on the spot and your opponent gets to the table. These are organized pool leagues.

Now, most bar-boxes where you have to pay... the '8' on the break wins unless you scratch. Some you don't. Just have to know the house rules. It varies from bar to bar, house to house.
